Alexander Steinberger Alexander Steinberger joined the Vienna State Opera in 1985 and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1988. He has served as a member of the Player’s Committee of the Vienna State Opera (1992-2000) and as its Chairman (2000-2002). He was first elected as Vice Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005 and served until 2014. In 2017 he was again elected to serve as Vice Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic.

Mr. Steinberger had his first violin lessons at the age of 5 at the Music School of the City of Vienna and after 7 years won entrance into the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He graduated with honors in the violin section and won multiple prizes in competitions including the Stephanie Hohl competition in 1980, the Vaclav Huml competition in 1981, and the Karl Bohm competition of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1984.
